Buddha's Teaching Meditation Retreat

Duration7 days
IncludedAll-inclusive
FocusBuddhist study and meditation
Quick Overview

The Buddha's teachings, studied and practised.

An immersive retreat exploring Buddha's core teachings, the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, impermanence, compassion, through daily meditation, yoga, and philosophical study.

This retreat pairs study of the Buddha's core teachings with daily meditation, in Nepal, the country where Siddhartha Gautama was born. Over seven days you work through the foundations of Buddhist thought and put them into direct practice rather than only reading about them. The week is built around Dharma talks, sitting and walking meditation, and periods of noble silence. Silence deepens as the retreat progresses, which gives the teachings room to move from intellectual understanding into your own experience.

Why this retreat?

  • Direct study of core Buddhist teachings: the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, and the Three Marks of Existence

  • Three meditation techniques taught and practised: Vipassana, Anapanasati, and Metta Bhavana

  • Daily Dharma talks from teachers drawing on established Buddhist lineages

  • Periods of noble silence, so the teachings settle into experience

  • Personal interviews with the teacher to support your own practice

  • A small group, in Nepal, the birthplace of the Buddha

  • 6 nights on the ashram, three organic meals a day, and pickup from Pokhara

Retreat Overview

The 7 day Teachings of Buddha and Meditation Retreat at Bodhidham is a study and practice retreat held in Ghachowk, near Pokhara. Over seven days it works through the foundations of Buddhist wisdom — the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, the Three Marks of Existence, and the practice of loving-kindness — while building a genuine meditation practice rooted in those teachings.

Noble silence is central. As the days progress, participants gradually enter and deepen into silence, which creates the conditions for the teachings to be experienced directly rather than only understood. The daily rhythm balances Dharma talks with sitting meditation, walking meditation, and mindful movement, guided by teachers who draw on established Buddhist lineages. Personal interviews with the teacher are available throughout to support each person's practice.

The retreat is held in Nepal, the country where Siddhartha Gautama was born, and the ashram setting in the foothills supports this kind of quiet, reflective work.

What you study and practise

  • The Four Noble Truths. The Buddha's account of suffering, its cause, its cessation, and the path that leads beyond it.
  • The Noble Eightfold Path. The eight dimensions of the path, from Right View through to Right Concentration, studied and applied.
  • The Three Marks of Existence. Impermanence, non-self, and suffering, explored through both teaching and meditation.
  • Vipassana (insight meditation). Observing experience as it arises and passes, with clear, equanimous awareness.
  • Anapanasati (mindfulness of breathing). Building concentration and presence with the breath as the anchor.
  • Metta Bhavana (loving-kindness). Steadily cultivating compassion toward yourself and all beings.
  • Walking meditation. Bringing mindfulness into slow, deliberate movement in the ashram grounds.

Bodhidham is a truly special place. I joined the 200-hour YTT and it was the best decision of my life. Swami Ananda is an extraordinary teacher — knowledgeable, kind, and deeply committed to authentic yoga. The ashram environment, the organic food, the mountain views... everything was perfect. I left with skills, confidence, and a profound inner shift. Highly recommend to anyone serious about yoga.

Attended the Silent Meditation Retreat and it exceeded all expectations. The silence was challenging at first but became deeply nourishing. The structure was perfect — yoga, meditation, philosophy, walks in nature. Swami Ananda's dharma talks were the highlight. I have attended many retreats in India and Europe and Bodhidham stands out for authenticity, warmth, and the incredible natural setting.

The 100-hour YTT at Bodhidham was an incredible experience. Despite being shorter than a full 200-hour program, the depth of teaching was remarkable. I learned more about real yoga in 11 days at Bodhidham than in years of studio classes back home. The environment — the village, the mountains, the organic farm, the community — creates the perfect conditions for deep learning. Already planning to return for the 200-hour.

Bodhidham exceeded all my expectations. The Yoga Trek was an incredible combination of physical challenge, natural beauty, and deep inner practice. Doing yoga at sunrise on Poon Hill with the Annapurna range in front of you is an experience that defies description. The guide was expert and the daily yoga sessions were adapted perfectly to our physical state after trekking. Absolutely magical.

I came in thinking mantra was a bit esoteric. By day four I was chanting on the bus back to the airport. The most practical meditation tool I've ever been given.

I spent 3 weeks doing the 200hr YTT at Bodhidham and it was truly life-changing. The teaching is authentic and deep — not just postures but the full philosophical and spiritual dimension of yoga. The location in Ghachowk is stunning. Waking up every morning to Himalayan views and birdsong sets the perfect tone for practice. The food is delicious and healing. I returned home a different person.

Best retreat experience I've had. The ashram has a beautiful family atmosphere. Teachers are genuinely experienced and caring. The food is outstanding — all organic, freshly prepared, and absolutely delicious. The mountain views are unreal. I came for a 7-day retreat and extended by another week because I didn't want to leave. Will definitely return.

I came to Bodhidham for the singing bowl and sound healing course and it was one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life. The instructor's knowledge is encyclopedic — history, technique, therapeutic application, the spiritual dimension. The sessions in the ashram garden at dusk with the Himalayan backdrop were genuinely magical. I left with a professional-level skill and a beautiful Nepali hand-hammered bowl. Unforgettable.

I attended the Detox Yoga Retreat and felt genuinely renewed by the end of the 7 days. The Ayurvedic diet, the daily yoga and pranayama, the kriyas, the mountain walks — it all worked together seamlessly to produce a sense of lightness and clarity I haven't felt in years. The teachers are knowledgeable, caring, and genuinely invested in each participant's wellbeing. The ashram is beautiful and peaceful. Highly recommend.

I'd tried Vipassana once and struggled. Mantra gave me something for the mind to do — the first time concentration felt accessible rather than a test I was failing.

The two nights of silence landed me somewhere I haven't been since childhood. Not mystical — just genuinely quiet. Came home unable to small-talk for a week.

This is the real thing. Not a yoga resort or a wellness hotel, but a genuine ashram with genuine teachers in a genuinely beautiful natural setting. The 300-hour advanced YTT was rigorous, comprehensive, and transformative. Swami Ananda and the team pushed us hard and supported us completely. I left as a significantly more capable and confident teacher. Best professional development investment I have ever made.

Frequently asked

Do I need to be Buddhist to join?

+
No. The retreat studies the Buddha's teachings as a practical path, not as a religion you have to convert to. People of any faith or none are welcome, and the teachings are presented as something to examine and practise rather than to believe. What matters is a genuine interest in the material and a willingness to meditate.

Do I need meditation experience?

+
It helps but it is not strictly required. The retreat teaches the meditation techniques from the ground up, so a beginner can follow them. That said, the days include extended sitting and periods of silence, which are demanding if you have never done them. If you have no experience at all, tell us when you enquire and we will be honest about whether to start here or with a gentler retreat.

What does noble silence involve, and is the whole week silent?

+
Noble silence means stepping back from conversation, devices, and external distraction so the teachings can settle into direct experience. On this retreat the silence is partial and builds gradually, rather than being total from day one, because the days also include Dharma talks and teaching. Your personal interviews with the teacher are the exception to the silence.

What is a typical day like?

+
Days balance Dharma talks and study with sitting meditation, walking meditation, and rest. It is a reflective retreat rather than a physically demanding one. The schedule stays consistent through the week, and the practice deepens as the silence settles.

What does the price include?

+
The price covers 6 nights accommodation on the ashram in a shared or private room, three organic vegetarian meals a day, all teaching and meditation sessions, a personal interview with the teacher, course materials and a Dharma reading list, and pickup and drop-off in Pokhara. It does not cover international flights or your Nepal visa.

How do I book, and what is the cancellation policy?

+
Booking is done directly with us over WhatsApp or the inquiry form. We confirm your dates and a clear price, usually with a deposit to hold your place. Cancellation and refund terms are set out on our Booking and Refund Policy page, so please read it before you pay, or ask us and we will explain it.
