Retreat Overview

Intense Retreat Details:

The 7 day Intense Yogasana with Meditation Retreat at Bodhidham is an intensive practice retreat in Ghachowk, near Pokhara, for committed practitioners. Over seven days it works through the pillars of classical yogic discipline: the eight limbs of Patanjali's Ashtanga Yoga as a framework, structured asana sequences, pranayama, and seated meditation, building toward a sustained personal practice.

The retreat is built around tapas, the disciplined and consistent effort at the centre of classical practice. Sessions begin at an introductory level and build into longer, more demanding work as the week progresses. Tapas here means steady commitment, not strain, but the retreat is genuinely hard, and it is best suited to people who already have a regular practice. Teaching is guided by experienced teachers drawing on Himalayan yoga lineages, with personal adjustments and one-on-one sessions available throughout.

This is not a rest or beginner retreat. You should have an established yoga practice and be in good general health before joining. If you are newer to yoga or want a gentler week, our Standard or Nature retreats are a better fit, and we are happy to point you to one.

What you study and practise

  • Patanjali's eight limbs. The framework of classical yoga, from the ethical foundations through asana and pranayama to the inner limbs.
  • Asana practice. Structured sequences of classical postures, building strength, flexibility, and steadiness with attention to alignment.
  • Pranayama. Foundational breathing techniques, including Nadi Shodhana, Kapalabhati, Bhastrika, and Ujjayi.
  • Surya Namaskar. The traditional sun salutation, practised as a daily moving meditation of breath and movement.
  • Dhyana (seated meditation). Sustained seated practice to build concentration and stillness.
  • Shatkarma. Instruction in the traditional yogic cleansing practices that prepare the body for deeper practice.
  • Mantra and chanting. Traditional Sanskrit mantras to open and close each day.

Bodhidham is a truly special place. I joined the 200-hour YTT and it was the best decision of my life. Swami Ananda is an extraordinary teacher — knowledgeable, kind, and deeply committed to authentic yoga. The ashram environment, the organic food, the mountain views... everything was perfect. I left with skills, confidence, and a profound inner shift. Highly recommend to anyone serious about yoga.

Attended the Silent Meditation Retreat and it exceeded all expectations. The silence was challenging at first but became deeply nourishing. The structure was perfect — yoga, meditation, philosophy, walks in nature. Swami Ananda's dharma talks were the highlight. I have attended many retreats in India and Europe and Bodhidham stands out for authenticity, warmth, and the incredible natural setting.

The 100-hour YTT at Bodhidham was an incredible experience. Despite being shorter than a full 200-hour program, the depth of teaching was remarkable. I learned more about real yoga in 11 days at Bodhidham than in years of studio classes back home. The environment — the village, the mountains, the organic farm, the community — creates the perfect conditions for deep learning. Already planning to return for the 200-hour.

Bodhidham exceeded all my expectations. The Yoga Trek was an incredible combination of physical challenge, natural beauty, and deep inner practice. Doing yoga at sunrise on Poon Hill with the Annapurna range in front of you is an experience that defies description. The guide was expert and the daily yoga sessions were adapted perfectly to our physical state after trekking. Absolutely magical.

I came in thinking mantra was a bit esoteric. By day four I was chanting on the bus back to the airport. The most practical meditation tool I've ever been given.

I spent 3 weeks doing the 200hr YTT at Bodhidham and it was truly life-changing. The teaching is authentic and deep — not just postures but the full philosophical and spiritual dimension of yoga. The location in Ghachowk is stunning. Waking up every morning to Himalayan views and birdsong sets the perfect tone for practice. The food is delicious and healing. I returned home a different person.

Best retreat experience I've had. The ashram has a beautiful family atmosphere. Teachers are genuinely experienced and caring. The food is outstanding — all organic, freshly prepared, and absolutely delicious. The mountain views are unreal. I came for a 7-day retreat and extended by another week because I didn't want to leave. Will definitely return.

I came to Bodhidham for the singing bowl and sound healing course and it was one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life. The instructor's knowledge is encyclopedic — history, technique, therapeutic application, the spiritual dimension. The sessions in the ashram garden at dusk with the Himalayan backdrop were genuinely magical. I left with a professional-level skill and a beautiful Nepali hand-hammered bowl. Unforgettable.

I attended the Detox Yoga Retreat and felt genuinely renewed by the end of the 7 days. The Ayurvedic diet, the daily yoga and pranayama, the kriyas, the mountain walks — it all worked together seamlessly to produce a sense of lightness and clarity I haven't felt in years. The teachers are knowledgeable, caring, and genuinely invested in each participant's wellbeing. The ashram is beautiful and peaceful. Highly recommend.

I'd tried Vipassana once and struggled. Mantra gave me something for the mind to do — the first time concentration felt accessible rather than a test I was failing.

The two nights of silence landed me somewhere I haven't been since childhood. Not mystical — just genuinely quiet. Came home unable to small-talk for a week.

This is the real thing. Not a yoga resort or a wellness hotel, but a genuine ashram with genuine teachers in a genuinely beautiful natural setting. The 300-hour advanced YTT was rigorous, comprehensive, and transformative. Swami Ananda and the team pushed us hard and supported us completely. I left as a significantly more capable and confident teacher. Best professional development investment I have ever made.

Frequently asked

Who is this retreat for, and is it suitable for beginners?

+
This retreat is for committed practitioners with an established yoga practice. It is not a beginner retreat. The word "intense" is accurate: the days involve structured asana practice twice over, and the sessions get longer and harder as the week goes on. If you are newer to yoga or want a calmer week, the Standard or Nature retreat will suit you far better, and we will gladly point you to one.

How fit and experienced do I need to be?

+
You should have a regular yoga practice behind you and be in good general physical health. You do not need to be advanced or able to do difficult postures, but you should be comfortable with daily, sustained asana practice. If you have an injury or a health condition, tell us before booking so we can be honest about whether this is the right retreat for you.

What does a typical day involve?

+
Days are built around two main asana sessions, with pranayama, seated meditation, introspection, and journaling in between, plus self-study time. Practice starts at an introductory level on day one and builds in length and intensity through the week. The first day begins with lunch and the last day ends with breakfast.

Will I get individual attention, or is it all group practice?

+
Both. Sessions are taught in a small group, and personal adjustments and one-on-one guidance are available throughout. The small group size is deliberate, so teachers can correct and support each person's practice rather than just leading from the front.

What does the price include?

+
The price covers 6 nights accommodation on the ashram in a shared or private room, three organic vegetarian meals a day, all asana, pranayama, and meditation sessions, personal guidance from the teachers, course materials and a reading list, and pickup and drop-off in Pokhara. It does not cover international flights or your Nepal visa.
